講演のタイトルは "Symmetry in Quantum Field Theory and Gravity"。

Dear Members and Friends of the Kavli IPMU Community,
As I look back at 2018, I am amazed by how much progress we have made in understanding our universe.
As I look back at 2018, I am amazed by how much progress we have made in understanding our universe.
● The Hyper Suprime-Cam team published its first scientific papers. Among them are a three-dimensional dark matter map with unprecedented width and depth, determination of the lumpiness of matter in the universe, and constraints on primordial black holes.
● The Prime Focus Spectrograph, currently under construction, has begun to be assembled at the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii. We look forward to its commissioning in 2019 and science data starting in 2021.
● Our Belle II team finished building the outermost shell of the Silicon Vertex Detector. The experiment is expected to be in full operation by the spring of 2019.
● In Kamioka, following the successful completion of our R&D effort at Evaluating Gadolinium’s Action on Detector Systems, Super-Kamiokande is being refurbished in preparation for gadolinium loading. This will make neutrons visible, allow positive identification of anti-neutrino interactions, and greatly reduce physics backgrounds.
● We are excited that the University of Tokyo announced the start of Hyper-Kamiokande construction in April 2020.
● Our research can also be useful for the society; one of our new projects will use x-ray and gamma-ray imaging to analyze cancer stem cells.
● Collaborations between mathematicians and physicist have been further strengthened by the appointments of Yukari Ito and Hiraku Nakajima. Our research results at the interface of mathematics and string theory were featured by four plenary talks at String-Math 2018 and two plenary talks at Strings 2018 by our faculty members.
● Ken’ichi Nomoto was awarded the Hans Bethe Prize from the American Physical Society for his lasting contributions to our understanding of the nuclear astrophysics.
We are proud of our administrative staff members who support the diverse community of scientists in special ways. This year, they were recognized by the University of Tokyo with the Special Prize in Business Transformation for their development of the Kavli IPMU app for smartphones, which helps our researchers and visitors to navigate inside and outside of the Kavli IPMU. This is their 6th award in business transformation.
After succeeding Hitoshi Murayama as the Director of the Kavli IPMU, I initiated the long term strategic planning exercise. As the first step, I requested each of our fourteen experimental research project teams to submit a report on its current status and future promises. Reading them, I was struck by the breadth and depth of the research projects we have developed over the past eleven years. The planning committee is also exploring new research initiatives.
Reflecting on these and other accomplishments of this remarkable institution, I am both inspired and humbled to serve as its Director. We challenge traditional approaches, study problems analytically, and discover creative solutions. I look forward to working with you to advance science further in 2019.
I wish you all a restful holiday season with friends and family, and a very happy new year.
With best wishes,
Hirosi Ooguri
